Boasting the world’s largest indoor ice and snow museum, ice-skating and sledding competitions as well as serving as the backdrop to parties and weddings, the Ice Festival is much more than just ice and snow sculptures. The tradition of making ice lanterns dates back to the Qing Dynasty in Harbin and the Ice Festival is considered a cultural event. H ELS IN KI, F IN L AN D Arts Meets Ice January 30 - February 1 2009 and February 6-8 2009 ❅ ❅ Twelve top ice carving teams will meet at the Helsinki Zoo this winter to support its conservation efforts at Art Meets Ice. Each weekend is dedicated to a theme. On the first weekend Saved by the Zoos explores animals preserved in zoos that have otherwise become extinct. The second weekend’s theme is Frogs Unlimited, underlining the rapid disappearance of frogs around the world. All proceeds from the event benefit fundraising efforts in support of frog conservation. The zoo will even arrange for ice sculpting schools for companies and visitors interested in ice carving. Art Meets Ice is a rare mix of art, ice and conservation work.
