AN ENGINEER Of INfLuENCE: ANNE SADO, P.ENG. Anne Sado did not start out with her sights on engineering. her love of math and sciences originally prompted her to consider pursuing a career in medicine. After a year of study, however, she learned that life sciences were not for her. She was encouraged to look into engineering and quickly realized it was the application of knowledge in math and science that really drew her interest. “I saw engineering as a valuable knowledge base for a broad range of careers,” Anne says. With her Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto in hand, this vision stood her in good stead through an impressive career progression up through the ranks of engineering, business and into academia. Anne began her career at Bell Canada in 1977. In 2000 she was named Senior Vice-President (Business Processes and Operational Effectiveness), a position that saw her play an instrumental role in increasing the company’s earnings by $450 million in 2001 and $550 million in 2002. She next took a position as Principal with Helix Commerce International, helping build the company offerings based on her telecom and high-tech industry expertise. Since 2004, Anne has served as President of George Brown College, a Toronto-based institute that offers credentials from apprenticeships, to one-year certificates, two- and three-year diplomas and four-year degrees in key sectors. Her impact on the vision, direction and culture of the college has resulted in significant growth and has activated a critical public discussion on the value of college education to Ontario’s economic development. “I love working in an environment that offers ‘applied’ education, taking me full circle to my education as an engineer,” she notes. Outside of her professional endeavours, Anne has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to her community. She has been recognized as one of YWCA’s 2012 Women of Distinction in Education and twice by The Women’s Execu- tive Network™ as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women of 2010 and 2012. She has contributed her expertise as a volunteer leader to many community and business organizations, including the YWCA of Greater Toronto, Colleges Ontario’s Committee of Presidents, the Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network (ORION), Trillium Health Centre, the Toronto Region Board of Trade, the Toronto Financial Service Alliance and others. In February 2013, Anne was named Chair of Polytechnics Canada, the voice of Canada’s leading degree-granting colleges, institutes of technology and polytechnics. Anne’s contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Ontario Professional Engineers Citizenship Award and the Ontario Professional Engineers Gold Medal. In 2012, she was inducted into the University of Toronto’s Engineering Hall of Distinction. Besides her engineering degree, she holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Toronto and was awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from the University of Toronto in 2011. Through it all, Anne has established herself as an exceptional role model, particularly to female engineers. “Don’t be daunted by the math and science,” she advises. “Our economy needs STEM graduates to ensure we continue to innovate and grow. I truly believe the opportunities are limitless.” Anne Sado, P.Eng., is the first guest in OSPE’s newly launched Engineers of Influence speaker series, showcasing the achievements and insights of extraordinary Ontario engineers. Watch for another installment of this exciting new series, coming this fall. TheVoice Summer 2013 7
