DECADES OF ADVOCACY: AN OSPE TIMELINE 1994 After many years of discussion within the profession, engineers begin actively lobbying for a separate organization that can advocate effectively for the interests of engineers. 1995 Ontario's Attorney General, Marion Boyd, speaks to PEO about separating regulation and advocacy. 2000 In February, PEO conducts a referendum of members. Eighty per cent vote in favour of creating an advocacy body for the profession. In April, the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers is born. 2002 With input from over 100 engineers from across the province, OSPE creates its first Advocacy Plan for Ontario's Engineers. 2003 OSPE advocacy results in changes to drinking water legislation, the first demand-side legislation win for Ontario's engineers. 2004 Premier Dalton McGuinty headlines OSPE's first major conference, "Engineering the Healthy City." 2005 OSPE advocates to end to low-fee bidding in favour of qualitybased selection of engineering services. 2006 OSPE creates the Political Action Network (PAN) to broaden its government outreach. 2009 OSPE advocates federally and provincially to protect Canadian intellectual property and engineering jobs in the nuclear sector. 2010 Ontario's Ministry of Infrastructure asks OSPE for input on the government's proposed 10-year infrastructure plan. 2010 After hosting dozens of panels, roundtables and learning forums, the OSPE Policy Series is formally established as quarterly discussion forum on engineering issues. 2011 Ontario's Ministry of Energy approaches OSPE for input on provincial energy policies. 2013 OSPE is invited to provide key input at Elliott Lake Inquiry Roundtables. OSPE addresses underemployment issues by undertaking groundbreaking research on the engineering labour market in Canada. 2014 OSPE continues to gain influence as a reasoned, expert voice on issues that matter to Ontario's engineers. 2000 APRIL TheVoice Spring 2014 1 7
