the world-renowned mining firm Dynatec Corporation, Bob
has experienced many flights to the Canadian arctic to visit job
sites and was eager to embark on a trip of greater magnitude.
"Having both studied engineering, Steven and I tend to
see everything through an 'engineering lens', if you will," says
Bob. "For us, this journey is an opportunity to shine a light on
Canadian innovation and engineering accomplishments, which
we find aren't often recognized within our own country, let
alone around the world."
Fortunately for father and son, their primary stakeholders
- Bob's wife Patricia and Steven's wife Bruna Pace, P.Eng. -
were extremely supportive of the idea. Bruna, a Professional
OSPE member who frequently contributes her expertise in
civil engineering as an OSPE Political Action Network (PAN)
volunteer and subject matter expert, is now helping manage the
logistics of C150GO full-time.
"I find many people have less respect for engineers than they
do for other professionals simply because they don't associate
engineering with the everyday," says Pace. "Realistically, we
encounter engineering more frequently in our day-to-day lives
than we probably do most things - we just don't know it. Why
not elevate the profile of our profession by showcasing Canadian
landmarks and technological milestones? Right from the outset,
I was totally invested in this journey."
To Bruna, the beauty of being an engineer is that she is
easily able to "switch gears," applying the qualities and skills
that she has acquired throughout her career well beyond her
specific field of work. Similarly, when her husband Steven,
who studied mechanical engineering at University of Western
Ontario, describes his experience as a pilot, he is adamant that
his engineering education has enabled him to wear many hats.
"A love of flying runs in my family, but my dad and I actually

discovered our interest in aviation independently," says Steven.
"I originally learned to fly fixed-wing aircraft before obtaining
my rotor endorsement, while my father learned to fly helicopters
from the outset. With any aircraft, I would say having an
engineering education is an asset in the cockpit."
Obtaining a pilot's licence is a substantially more challenging
endeavor than obtaining a driver's licence. Beyond learning
how to fly, pilots also have a duty to understand the physical
performance of the aircraft. This includes the engineering
behind the engine, systems and controls, as well as the Theory
of Flight and the physics behind flying - from fluid dynamics
to the evaluation of meteorological variables like temperature
and winds.
"We've made sure that we have a good understanding of the
performance of the Bell 429 - its range, fuel burn, weight - it's
an interplay of factors," says Steven. "When flying, weight and
balance is a huge part of the equation, so that you know how
much load you can safely carry, for example. You do a full risk
analysis before any flight and are continuously re-evaluating
while in the air. These calculations and considerations represent
the practical application of science to accomplish real world
tasks, and if that's not the textbook definition of engineering, I
would say it's got to be pretty close."
The first C150GO stop will be the Canada Aviation and Space
Museum in Ottawa. The team will then move eastward before
navigating the open ocean, foraying into Europe and Russia
and then returning to Canadian soil via Alaska. The Denglers
accounted for each of the journey's landmark stops during the
flight planning stages to ascertain the most efficient flight path,
as it is critical that all legs of the trip remain well within the
range of the helicopter.
The team's third pilot, helicopter ace Rob 'Dugal' MacDuff,
