what does ImaX look for when hiring
engineers and engineering grads?
"I think it's important for engineering
graduates, during their four-year tenure
at university, to take business-related
courses so that they start to develop an
acumen of how business and engineering
work together," said Bonnick. "I find
that new grads have the fundamental
engineering skill set, which is good. Some
are better than others, but generally all
engineering graduates have it. Where I
see weaknesses in engineering is when
graduates have never designed a product
with any understanding of other elements
in the food chain. Junior engineers often
find that these are traits they have to learn
on the job."
Bonnick also sees new grads that have
difficulty managing their time. They can
often underestimate how long product
development may take, for example.
Managers and other senior engineers at
IMAX will mentor new employees and
help them learn, but Bonnick says IMAX
notices when engineers and engineering
graduates have some of these skill sets, or
have been exposed to the ins and outs of
product development already.
While the above qualifications are
nice-to-haves, Bonnick believes there
is one specific trait that every IMAX
employee should possess. "The most
critical attribute I look for in a candidate
is whether they have that twinkle in their
eye," said Bonnick.
"Do they look like they want to
work for IMAX? Are they excited and
passionate about the type of work we do?
I find individuals that are passionate will
excel the most, as we like to promote from
within. Attitude is the most important
thing in an interview. Those who want to
apply themselves, and want to learn, will
excel at IMAX. So the first thing I look
for is whether they have that sparkle in
their eye."

Perks of working at ImaX
IMAX Corporation was selected as one
of Canada's Top 100 Employers (2017)
and Greater Toronto's Top Employers
(2017) two years in a row. According to
Estrella Frias, IMAX's Director of Talent
Acquisition, IMAX employees are highly
engaged.
"We are incredibly proud of our
company, our iconic brand, our
Corporate Social Responsibility program
and our people," said Frias. "We set a high
bar for talent where passion, engagement,
respect and collaboration are cultural
requirements. We're proud to say that
people who join IMAX tend to stay at
IMAX."
Some of IMAX's core values
include preserving and cultivating an
entrepreneurial spirit while embracing
creativity and innovation. "IMAX has
been around for about 50 years, but we're
not afraid to reinvent and outdo ourselves.
We've evolved with the times while
staying true to our heritage and corporate
mission," said Frias. "The imagination of
our engineers and all employees continues
to inspire new technology. Our culture is
one of continuous improvement and we
constantly challenge the status quo."
Frias says that aside from a great
work culture, innovative technology and
working for an exciting industry, IMAX
offers a subsidized social committee
that organizes a number of events and
celebrations for staff each year, including
an employee and children's holiday party,
summer events such as a volleyball
tournament, billiard and bowling nights,
as well as ice cream and food truck days.
"We offer weekly yoga classes, a
running group, a hockey team and
a weekly volleyball pick-up game,"
said Frias. "Outside, the company
maintains two bicycles for employees
to use as needed during the work day."
Additionally, IMAX opens its in-house
theatre for friends and family screenings
of major blockbuster releases.
IMAX also helps employees plan for
the longer term with contributions to a
defined pension plan, and manages a yearend bonus program. Additionally, the

company offers generous referral bonuses
when employees successfully recruit a
friend, and a tuition reimbursement
program. "These are just a few of the
reasons why our employees love working
here," said Frias.
what will make you a successful engineer
or engineering graduate at ImaX?
Campbell believes that individuals
who succeed in engineering and design
work at IMAX, and elsewhere, share a
common trait. "They always have great
visualization. They have good, strong
calculations, but more so, they can see
things in their head, pre-built," Campbell
said.
"They don't have an off switch. They're
always working and thinking, and trying
to figure out what the next great idea is,
or what is a better way of doing things.
Those people who find it difficult to
turn their creative ideas off are the most
successful."
Broga believes it's a hands-on attitude
that is critical when it comes to working
on innovative products. "We work
in a dynamic environment where we
have to juggle development effort and
maintain or diagnose technical issues
that may occur in theatres. A lot of that
investigation is done remotely, so we have
to be able to build out fixtures in our lab
and be very hands-on to get to the root
of the problem," said Broga.
"I think it comes down to making
good decisions. You never really are done
engineering a product. The expectation
is that our systems run or could run
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days
a year. We have to complete the design
analysis up front and understand what
risks we're taking while we continue to
refine products continuously. Our main
goal is engineering our products so that
everybody in the theatre has a great movie
experience," said Broga.
