Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) currently
participate in the Academy.
This enhanced skills training and career-start program
provides a curriculum of theory mixed with practical experience
that complements the post-secondary curriculum students
receive. "What we are looking for are students with an ability
to innovate and contribute to both Siemens and the world," Dr.
Murad states.
When asked how he feels about the importance of work
integrated learning opportunities for students, Dr. Murad is
resolute. "Industry is behind in recognizing the importance of
building its resources and in taking action... it's too late to debate
the importance of co-ops. Instead, there needs to be a focus on
the quality of co-op programs that students participate in.
We [industry] have a responsibility towards the next
generation. If we don't invest in preparing them to be good
engineers, we won't have skilled people running our industries,
infrastructure, etc..."
Another innovative program under the umbrella of
SCETA and near and dear to Dr. Murad's heart is the Siemens
Mechatronics Systems Certification Program (SMSCP).
Mechatronics is the combination of mechanical, electrical, and
software engineering, and is having an ever-growing impact on
production and advanced manufacturing.
Siemens has partnered with three colleges in Ontario -
Seneca, Sheridan and Mohawk - to provide these institutions
with the curriculum needed to offer mechatronics certification

programs. As a global leader in mechatronics engineering
and automated systems technologies, Siemens also provides
professors and instructors with program methodology training
in Berlin, Germany. Once qualified and certified by Siemens,
partner schools integrate the mechatronics certification into
their curriculum and teach the program in their own classrooms.
Another option is to provide this certification program as a
stand-alone continuous education course to provide further
technical skills and certification for the existing workforce.
Participating students graduate with a diploma and an
industry (Siemens) certification in three levels of mechatronics
training. Dr. Murad emphasizes that the mechatronics
