FLORA AND FAUNA Canada’s West is home to a surprisingly wide variety of flora and fauna. Each geographical area we travel through offers something a little different. You never know what is ahead—a bear or a moose—but keep your camera at the ready in case they do appear. Don’t worry, they’re used to the paparazzi. COASTAL RAINFOREST Along British Columbia’s West Coast is the largest remaining intact temperate rainforest in the world. It boasts the highest biomass—or total amount of organisms—per hectare of any ecosystem on earth. Here cedar trees can be 1,000 years old and Sitka spruce can grow to 90 metres high. Streams abundant in salmon provide food for black bears, grizzlies and eagles. ROCKY MOUNTAINS Made up of rugged mountain peaks, icefields and glaciers, wildflower-filled alpine meadows, lakes and waterfalls, the Canadian Rockies are the perfect habitat for grizzly bears. Weighing in at up to 325 kilograms (720 pounds), they are by far the most famous inhabitants of this area. However, this drop-dead gorgeous part of the world is home to many other animals, including black bears, mountain sheep and goats, cougars, lynx, wolves, coyotes, foxes and a variety of deer. INTERIOR MOUNTAINS The dominant trees in British Columbia’s Southern Interior Mountains are western red cedar and western hemlock, though Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine are common at lower elevations. This region is home to over 350 kinds of birds, including one of the largest concentrations of osprey in the world. Keep your binoculars at the ready to spot mule and white-tailed deer, as well as elk, caribou and bighorn sheep.
