First Passage to the West
VANCOUVER – K AMLOOPS – BANFF – CALGARY
Retrace the steps of 19th century explorers, travel through the legendary Spiral Tunnels and pass by the spot where the Last Spike on the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. This is the only passenger rail service on this historic route and its building is one of the most important in Canadian history as it united Canada from east to west. You’ll also transverse the Continental Divide and be inspired by spectacular mountains and dramatic canyons. If you’re a history buff, this route is for you.
Vancouver to Kamloops Kamloops to Banff or Calgary
Board the world-renowned Rocky Mountaineer train at the Rocky Mountaineer Vancouver Station. Pass through the fertile fields of the Fraser Valley and view the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains before entering the Fraser Canyon. You’ll see the thundering waters of Hell’s Gate and follow the Thompson River to historic Kamloops, gateway to the Interior of British Columbia. Stay overnight in moderate accommodations in Kamloops.
Continue east through the vast ranchlands along the South Thompson River, pass Craigellachie, where the Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, and enter Rogers Pass, with its tunnels, snowsheds and glistening glaciers. Climb through the Spiral Tunnels and over the Continental Divide to Banff National Park. End your journey in Banff or continue on to the “Stampede City” of Calgary the same evening.
