Kahan, Vice-President, University Advancement Do you remember your first work placement, internship or co-op job? What was it like to test the waters of your chosen career? to try out your hardwon skills and knowledge? to work with professionals and learn from them? For many alumni, early opportunities to learn on the job have proven invaluable to their future. those opportunities are part of an overall approach called experiential learning, a process that engages students in active learning and one that is growing across all faculties. such learning encompasses volunteer work, research, student competitions and artistic exhibitions. many projects are student-designed and produced. this is a Ryerson tradition and the university is committed to continuing it. Last fall, for example, nursing students helped organize and staff an h1N1 vaccination clinic at Ryerson, gaining valuable experience and providing needed help to the university community. this year, chemical engineering students designed an award-winning water treatment plant that will prevent harmful pharmaceuticals and endocrine-disrupting compounds from entering lakes and rivers. one professor who incorporates such learning is steve Gedeon. he teaches the year-long experiential capstone courses in entrepreneurship. through his teaching, 100 students generated more than $20 million in new revenue for 19 companies and started more than a dozen new companies over three years. he won the Ryerson Experiential teaching award in 2009. many alumni are also involved in experiential learning, offering students work placements, internships and co-op positions. it’s all part of the hands-on education for which Ryerson is renowned. in addition, it’s a win-win situation: while students benefit from working in the field, alumni employers benefit from students’ contributions – and knowing they are educating future leaders. We would love alumni to get involved in Ryerson’s experiential learning. to find out more, visit www.ryerson.ca/ experiential_learning/ or www.ryerson.ca/co-op/ for information about formal co-op positions.
