Her multi-faceted position now entails editing some of Canada’s most important authors including Giller Prize winner Joseph Boyden and Ryerson’s own Randy Boyagoda. “There is a fundamental visceral feeling I still get from really great original writing,” she says. “The job is to fall in love with writing and then to figure out the best way to bring it to readers.” As a prose aficionado who has become Canada’s predominate publisher, Winstanley’s advice to aspiring writers who hope to one day be reverentially “shortlisted” is particularly apt. “It really comes down to words on a page,” she offers. “The best advice I have for any writer is just one word: begin.” n gARy RUSAk iS A WRitER BASEd in toRonto. Photo: LiSA MyERS W hen Nicole Winstanley was a cubicle-dweller on Bay Street with an honours degree in English, she admits her mind often wandered. “It just wasn’t feeding my soul the way literature does,” she reflects. Now as president and publisher of Penguin Canada, she fondly remembers her decision to enrol in Ryerson University’s Publishing Certificate program offered through The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education. It was a tailored fit for the voracious reader, who devoured a book a day during the long train commute between her home in Stouffville, Ont. and her job in downtown Toronto. The flexible program allowed her to work during the day and attend classes at night. It was a heavy workload, to be sure, but it steered her towards a successful career in publishing. “What I loved most about the program was how practical it was,” she says. “It was taught by real people in publishing.” After graduating with the certificate in 2000, Winstanley worked her S U M M E R 2013 • Ryerson University Magazine 25
