INITIALLY, SHE WASN'T SURE she would enjoy
research. But Leslie Bone (PhD '17) says
Ryerson helped her get in touch with her love
for science. Today, she has spent five years
in the Faculty of Science and accumulated a
remarkable list of accomplishments.
On the academic front, Bone is completing
her PhD in Molecular Science, and spent her
doctoral studies learning more about how fats
communicate within cells and their potential
involvement in cancer progression. Recently,
she and her fellow researchers saw their
findings published in the journal, Molecular
Biology of the Cell.
But Bone's time at Ryerson is defined just as
much by giving back. In 2014, she co-founded
the Women in Science at Ryerson (WISR)
group with fellow student Nakita Buenbrazo,
now a lab technician in Ryerson's Wakarchuk
Lab. The WISR's mission is to provide support
and career preparation for female graduate
science students. Among recent activities, the
group organized a Women in STEM conference
at Ryerson in November 2016 and a private
screening of the film Hidden Figures in 2017.
Bone says she's witnessed positive growth
in her program over the years, including a
career development program for Physics
graduate students, plus two new undergrad
courses - Cancer Biology and Critical Thinking
for Bioscientists. Personally, Bone says she has
also enjoyed the new state-of-the-art research
labs at the MaRS facility and the opportunity
to collaborate with different labs (including
St. Michael's Hospital and Queens University).
After graduation, Bone wants to continuing
working in research and also communications
- whether in academia or for a biotech or
pharmaceutical firm - and increase the
visibility of science to the public.
