Ryerson Faculty of Science - 5th Anniversary - 20
Focused on Big Data
and the Cloud
Dr. Cherie Ding finds
with industry partners
CAN WE PREDICT HOW humans will behave?
And if we track those behaviours on social
media, can we use that information to guide
how we do business?
Dr. Cherie Ding develops tools that
can harness the staggering power of
recommendation systems based on data
analysis. Her primary focus includes cloudbased service selection and recommendation,
and behaviour analytics for social networks.
Like other Ryerson researchers, Ding finds
herself engaged in more collaborative research
and in the last five years has increased her
involvement in a number of industry projects.
For example, Ding supervised a Ryerson group
to assist MedCurrent, a software company
whose mission is to develop intelligent
solutions that improve quality of care and
reduce health-care costs. Ryerson researchers
improved ease of use and helped bring greater
search efficiencies for the company's clinical
decision support application, Order Wise™.
While her research has natural real-world
appeal, Ding says the university further
supports industry collaborations. "There
are more of those kinds of opportunities
Ding also admits she's found the shift
beyond purely academic research invigorating.
"You actually get to test what you have learned.
If you apply it in the real system, does it
work? How can you make that better?" Ding
is gratified to see that her work, like building
better software for hospitals, is supporting
clinicians and having a positive impact
