For Chris Heggerud,
the quality of instruction
at Ryerson stands out

ASKED WHY HE CHOSE RYERSON , Alberta native
Chris Heggerud (BSc '15), who completed
his Applied Mathematics degree in 2015, says
unequivocally, the applied approach was the
draw. "The program itself seemed a bit more
accessible and more interesting, as compared
to other universities. And in applied math
there are definitely many fields opening up -
lots of demand for young students and young
researchers in general."
Heggerud says a couple of things stand out
from his undergrad years, starting with the
quality of instruction. "Faculty members in the
university, and the Mathematics department
specifically, they were just amazing. There
wasn't one bad apple."
Beyond that, he says within the department
he noticed a growing emphasis on involving
students in research. "I like to think I had
a part in that because I was definitely
encouraging my peers towards trying to get

summer research projects. And I had quite a
few myself."
Remarkably, while still an undergrad
Heggerud conducted research on
mathematically modelling predator-prey
dynamics, supervised by Dr. Kunquan Lan,
a member of the Biomathematics and Fluids
group. The duo published their findings jointly
in the Applied Mathematics and Computation
journal. Today, Heggerud attributes this early
research opportunity with helping him secure
his acceptance into a PhD program.
While at Ryerson, Heggerud received
numerous awards and scholarships including
the Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award
and two NSERC undergraduate research awards.
He is currently a PhD student in Applied
Mathematics at the University of Alberta.
"Once I complete my PhD, I'd like to pursue a
career in academics at a university faculty or
be engaged in research for an organization."
