Dr. Noel George takes
science pedagogy
to the next level

"YOU HAVE TO ALWAYS BE THINKING about new

ways to engage students," says Dr. Noel
George. A professor tasked with teaching large
classes of undergrads - including many nonscience majors who are intimidated or even
bored by chemistry - George is undeterred.
Known for his classroom innovation, passion
for science and unwavering commitment,
he pursues one mission: to make chemistry
accessible and interesting for his students.
As for his methods, George says he is a
big proponent of technology. "As class sizes
get bigger, the use of technology is becoming
more important." On the technology side,
George has implemented personal response
systems (clickers), online homework
platforms, and more recently, digital badges.
And personally, he's known for his caring,
humour and a willingness to step beyond
ordinary lecture structure.

"Dr. George made the classes unforgettable
and different from others by using 'clickers'
to help us practice concepts we learned," says
Maja Chojnacka, a former student who is now
a graduate student at the University of Toronto.
"It was a fantastic tool that helped to see if the
class understood the new concept or not, but
also helped every student individually to see
what he/she needed to study."
Beyond the classroom, George has
contributed to general chemistry textbooks,
Canadian curricular design in chemistry
and served on two publishers' editorial
advisory boards.
His colleague Dr. Stephen Wylie says,
"His service on the Chemical Education national
executive committee for the Chemical Institute
of Canada and his membership of the program
accreditation board of the Chemical Society of
Canada have raised Ryerson's profile nationally."
