DR. EMILY AGARD IS AN EXCEPTIONAL and highly
dedicated teacher. But at Ryerson, her
duties also take Agard far beyond the lecture
hall. In 2015, having identified science
communication and community outreach
as priorities, the university approached
Agard, a biologist, to become the program's
first director. She accepted and Agard now
serves as Ryerson's director of SciXchange
(formerly called SCOPE).
Agard admits committing to outreach
versus research was a big decision. But in the
end, she decided to follow her passion and
hasn't looked back. Agard says she's seen too
many students at secondary levels who don't
feel science is an option for them. "I'm really
motivated to let students see themselves as
possibly in a science career."
Today she focuses on making science
accessible, engaging and inclusive and

mentors many youth in the community.
As SciXchange director, Agard regularly
facilitates science enrichment activities,
mentoring programs, summer camps and
campus visits to Ryerson for elementary
and secondary students. "We find the
experience of coming on campus really
makes a difference for students who might
not have thought of science," she says.
Agard also continues to be an energetic
and innovative champion for science
outreach. In the last few years, a range of
events has included Science Rendezvous,
an all-day celebration held at Toronto's
Yonge-Dundas Square, and local Science
Slam pub nights.
Agard was also recently featured on the
CBC News Toronto series HERstory in
Black speaking about her science outreach
work for Ryerson.
