Sudbury, to a very distinct, yet growing number of collectors of classic roadsters and automobiles, owning and restoring is more than just a hobby. “When you are younger, you see these cars you want but sometimes you just can’t have them,” says collector Gary Lonsberry. “But when you get a little bit older and you can afford to buy or rebuild one of these vehicles, it just takes you back in time and you feel young again.” Lonsberry is president of Sudbury Classic Cruisers Car Club. He owns nine vehicles including a 1930 Model A Ford, a 1941 Ford Convertible and a 1960 two-door Buick hardtop. “Collecting definitely is a passion,” explains Lonsberry. “Just recently I was looking at a 1968 Chevelle and realized it was the exact car I sold 29 years ago. “I couldn’t believe it. It had passed through three different owners since I sold it and, after almost 30 years, I was buying back my old car.” Every spring, once the weather turns warm, the Sudbury Classic Cruisers meet and greet every Sunday evening at the Costco parking lot. In the fall and winter, members meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Carmichael playground on Bancroft Dr. As part of the Canadian Hot Rod Tour, Lonsberry and his fellow members have travelled as far as Victoria, B.C. Just recently the club toured southern Ontario to attend different car shows where they shared stories, took part in competitions and showed off their objects of pride, hard work and acquisition. The club exists for more than just social purposes. To date, Lonsberry and his club have raised almost $100,000 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Members also work hard for their annual car show at Bell Park each August. Proceeds from the event go the Sudbury Food Bank. Fall 2008 Sudbury Living 45
