Smaller ones are open seasonally, while those in cities are open year-round. Summer is a good time to browse art studios and galleries and take in outdoor theatre productions. Concerts and plays get into full production in the autumn and winter is symphony season in Kamloops and the Okanagan Valley. First Nations Culture: Thrill to the rhythm of the drums and the colour of native dancers at the Squilax Pow Wow in July and the renowned Kamloopa Pow Wow on the August long weekend. Fully explore aboriginal culture at the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos. W atch artists in their studios as they work with oils, bronze, wood, clay, fabric, semi-precious gems, glass, stone and metal, often using motifs that reflect the landscapes, flora, fauna and cultural themes of the Region. Browse the collections of distinguished galleries and drop by casual cooperatives. Several communities host annual art shows. Music Festivals: Two Thompson Okanagan communities are famous for their annual music events. Merritt, the Country Music Capital of Canada, hosts the Merritt Mountain Music Festival in early July. Then visit the Shuswap region in August for the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival. Stay for the Show: Spring launches the year with the Okanagan’s first wine festival. Summer is the time for outdoor music, pow wows and eco events like the Meadowlark Festival.
