Toronto Tourism Magazine 2009 - (Page 12) Cityscapes around town Signs of the Times As the song goes: signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs. In Toronto, signs don’t just tell you where to go, they point to the multicultural nature of the city. Dozens of distinct neighbourhoods exist in Toronto, each with signs inked in their own language — a reflection of the huge immigrant population (half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada). And it isn’t just ethnic restaurants and specialty food shops that bear the distinct flavour of a foreign homeland; even road signs are bilingual, displayed in both English and Cantonese, and Korean, and Italian, and Greek, and so on and so on. 12 | www.SeeTorontoNow.com http://www.seetorontonow.com
