Cityscapes around town Public Art, Peaceable Kingdom Animals loom large in our imaginations, especially in downtown Toronto where on a three-hour walking tour you can encounter a sprawling peaceable kingdom of sculpted creatures — no entry fee required. In fact, according to Jane Perdue, public art coordinator for the City of Toronto, there are scores of art works available for viewing within the few blocks of the downtown core. Start with Michael Snow’s Flight Stop, a naturalistic flock of Canadian geese descending from the glass galleria in the Eaton Centre (Yonge and Queen). Look close and you’ll see that they’re actually life-sized photos of geese glued onto fibreglass taxidermy forms. Beloved mascots of the financial district, Joe Fafard’s The Pasture comprises a herd of seven contented bronze cows hunkered down in the TorontoDominion Centre plaza (at the foot of a pair of architecturally important office towers by Mies van der Rohe). In the Yorkville gallery district, an obdurate Fafard bronze bull stands splay-legged in front of the Mira Godard Gallery (22 Hazelton Ave.). Remembered Sustenance, Cynthia Short’s magical herd of gentle dog-eared donkeys roams the grassy sward in front of Metro Hall’s daycare centre on Wellington Street West. Fastwurms’ Woodpecker Column is a giant woodpecker on a pole with coloured light seeping out of the pole’s pecked holes at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s south entrance (at 222 Bremner Blvd.). Watch for future additions to Toronto’s peaceable kingdom as the city’s Planning and Urban Design Department continues to negotiate with major developers for community amenities, including public art. — Betty Ann Jordan Breakfast Without Breaking the Bank Scrambled, poached or fried?
