Toronto Tourism Magazine 2009 - (Page 42) Toronto Harbour Covering 10 acres of boardwalks, parks and attractions, Harbourfront Centre (at the foot of York Street) holds more than 4,000 events each year, including theatre and dance performances. In the summer, the World Routes weekend series offers free outdoor concerts (from classical and jazz to hip hop). There are also art exhibits at The Power Plant, a public art gallery. A clue to the area’s dockyard beginnings is the Queen’s Quay Terminal — previously a wharf warehouse, today the site of exclusive shops and restaurants. People have been flocking to the Toronto Island for hundreds of years — the first visitors being the Mississauga Indians, who also travelled here for rest and relaxation. Reached by ferry, which travels from the foot of Bay Street to one of three docks on the Island (Hanlan’s Point, Centre Island and Ward’s Island), the islands offer a range of activities from one end to the other, including tennis courts, softball diamonds, volleyball courts, picnic areas, boat and bicycle rentals, and several beaches (including one clothing optional). Centreville, designed for children with more than 30 rides, is open from May to September. The city skyline featuring one of the world’s tallest structures, the CN Tower.
