Local harvest Old MacDonald would have loved it here. At Forsythe Family Farms in Markham, animal lovers can nuzzle up to many of the farm animals that graze the farm’s pastures, families can venture into the fields and pick their own crops or explore the two-acre corn maze. Small visitors will want to hop on a wagon ride to the Enchanted Forest and walk a nature trail, greeted along the way by storybook scenes (created by local artists) from childhood favourites like Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. (Open May to December; call (905) 887-1087 or visit www.forsythefamilyfarms.ca) Harvest season is at its height from August to October at Pine Farms Orchard & Winery. Nestled in the gentle rolling hills of King Township, this orchard offers pick-your-own heritage varieties of apples, including melba (tender, sweet dessert apples) and mcIntosh, as well as other favourite varieties (cortland, spartan and northern spy). For a true taste of nature’s bounty, a visit to the bakeshop and winery is a must. Housed in the original apple storage barn, the shop is filled with everything from freshly made pies and gourmet preserves to honey and candy apples (bring lots of hand wipes!). Indulge in a cider tasting — apple or strawberry — or stop in at the winery to stock up on unique, delicious fruit wines. (Open May to December; call 905-833-5459 or visit www.pinefarmsorchard.com) The First Nations people were among the first to learn how to extract the liquid gold from the maples surrounding them. Now, visitors to The Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival at The Kortright Conservation Area and Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area can learn their syrup secrets and share the sweet delight. Take a hike along the trails and find out how Canada produces about 85 percent of the world’s maple syrup. For the kids, there are wagon rides, craft activities and, of course, maple syrup tastings. March and April. (Visit trcaparks.ca and kortright.org). Admission is free at Round the Bend family farm, where kids can’t wait to climb or run through the hay maze, feed the lambs and piglets or moo with the cows — all the while learning fun farm facts. Did you know that…a mother sheep is called a yo?
