Strokes of Canadian art McMichael Canadian Art Collection, 10365 Islington Ave., Kleinburg: Known for its devotion to collecting and exhibiting only Canadian art, the McMichael collection features almost 6,000 pieces of art by the Group of Seven, Tom Thomson and First Nations artists, celebrating Canada’s distinctiveness — its peoples, cultures, history and landscape. Aside from the masterpieces inside the gallery’s walls, visitors will be captivated by the breathtaking scenes outside, including an original log home, acres of wooded conservation land, hiking trails and sculptures. (Visit www.mcmichael.com) Varley Art Gallery, 216 Main St., Unionville: The Varley gallery makes a significant contribution to Canada’s artistic heritage with one of the largest permanent collections of paintings by Group of Seven member Frederick Horsman Varley, known for his portraiture and landscape works. The gallery, located in the Unionville Heritage District, also features a number of renowned contemporary works by J.E.H.
