The sporting life A true sport-loving city, Mississauga boasts a myriad of professional and recreational sports and fitness facilities. The city’s world-class sporting venues have helped develop the talents of native Mississaugans like NHL hockey stars Brad Boyes, Chris Campoli and Matt Stajan, as well as Olympic athletes like Attila Buday and Allison Higson. For serious sports fans, the Hershey Centre, home to the OHL’s St. Michael’s Majors features a 5,400-seat rink for fast-paced junior hockey action, as well as three additional ice surfaces used by local minor and adult hockey organizations, figure skating clubs and other community groups. To further enrich Mississauga’s thriving sports culture, the recently opened Hershey SportZone Complex, an annex to the Hershey Centre, boasts an indoor gymnasium and high-performance gymnastics centre, four outdoor artificial soccer fields, and a FIFAsized indoor artificial turf field. Situated on 160 acres of parkland, Iceland Mississauga is a state-of-the-art sports complex with four ice pads to accommodate everything from family fun to professional skating events. With an Olympicsized ice surface and three recreational rinks, Iceland’s concessions and restaurant, as well as banquet facilities, make it an ideal spot for business or pleasure. For a breath of fresh air, visit Iceland’s scenic walking trails and picnic areas, sports fields and Skateboard Park. 62 | www.SeeTorontoNow.com Photo: (top) Dan Hamilton/Vantage Point Studios http://www.seetorontonow.com
