Continue on to Liberia, named “the white city” because of its white adobe houses and white dirt roads. Overnight in Liberia. (B, D) DAY 5: LIBERIA / RINCON DE LA VIEJA VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK / BIJAGUA DE UPALA Go hiking in Rincon de la Vieja National Park, where you can walk close to the small craters and their boiling hot mud springs, sulphur springs, steam vents and fumaroles. The park has a variety of wildlife, including over 300 bird species. After lunch, continue to the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes. Overnight in Bijagua de Upala. (B, L, D) DAY 6: BIJAGUA DE UPALA / TENORIO VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK / FORTUNA DE SAN CARLOS (2 NIGHTS) Explore one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets, Rio Celeste. In Tenorio Volcano National Park, hike through a forest filled with howler monkeys and other wildlife to the spectacularly blue Rio Celeste Waterfall. Overnight in the Fortuna de San Carlos area.
