M VERNON Yours to Explore | B Y TOU R IS M VERNON ake the right turn from the Kelowna International Airport onto Highway 97 and in 40 minutes you will arrive in the beautiful City of Vernon. With its history as a trading centre in the 1800s, Vernon (pop. 36,000) remains the major business community for the North Okanagan. Beautiful old mansions and buildings define its unique personality and the many cultural and historic attractions tell the stories of the people who shaped the community. The first thing visitors notice about Vernon, is its beautiful setting amid valleys, mountains, rivers and three lakes – Okanagan, Swan and Kalamalka. When you combine this natural setting with wonderful Okanagan weather, the result is a very desirable year round destination. However, if you have only seen Vernon from the confines of Hwy 97, which cuts through the community, you are missing a great deal. The secret to its growing success is that more and more people are turning off the highway and are finding that Vernon has a lot to offer. With over 100 lakes within one hour from downtown; you can boat, paddle, swim, fish or sail to your heart’s content. Vernon’s farmer’s market takes place three times a week from May to October and eating local is “as easy as pie”. With the agricultural bounty surrounding Vernon, you can also go and meet many of the farmers who grow the food that will grace your table at dinner. From dragon boating to lawn bowling to slo-pitch to hockey to world class golf and mountain biking; Vernon is an active community with sport and recreation facilities that regularly host regional, national and international events. If you like a little elevation, Silver Star Mountain Resort, located just 22 km from downtown, is home to biking and hiking in summer and snow sports in winter. Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre has over 50 km of cross country trails and will host the upcoming 2011 Masters World Cup. In any season, the mountaintop is a great way to take in breathtaking views of the valley and Monashee Mountains. Family friendly festivals and events are a big part of Vernon and in 2010 our 10 day Winter Carnival will celebrate 50 years of fun starting Jan. 29.
