PARADISE | B Y R ON MA NZ Golfer’s Kelowna Springs Golf Course L akes, beaches, fruit, and wine, these are all reasons why people flock to the Okanagan, but you can also include ‘golf paradise’ on that list. The myriad of recreational activities that can be enjoyed in the valley seems endless, but for golfers, the Okanagan is a feast, providing a sumptuous taste of every type of golf experience you can dream of. Best of all, the multitude of resorts and courses available means you can sample a lot in a short time whether you’re visiting or even if you live here. Three of Canada’s top 100 courses can be found in the Okanagan according to Score Magazine. At the head of that list is one of oldest in the valley, the Salmon Arm Golf Club, built in 1928. It has been ranked in the top 50 the past eight straight years. Designed by golf architect Les Ferber, the 7,000 yard 18-hole championship course carved out of towering pine and fir trees on a mountainside also features a 9-hole ‘beginner friendly’ executive course. “We pride ourselves in that every hole is unique but is playable for both the low or high handicap golfer,” says head pro Adam Blair. “There is challenge, risk and reward all offered on every hole and it largely depends on which of our six tee boxes you decide to play from that will determine your ultimate enjoyment.” A short distance away on the shores of Mara Lake, you will find Hyde Mountain, nominated as Canada’s best new course in 2003 by Golf Digest. Extensive elevation changes are featured on this mountain top layout where being able to play target golf is crucial. It also is the only course offering free shuttle pickup from its dock on Mara Lake to people coming by boat or houseboat to play! The Okanagan’s most well known course is Predator Ridge Golf Resort by Vernon. Three of Canada’s top 100 courses can be found in the Okanagan according to Score Magazine. It has hosted the Telus World Skins Game won by Fred Couples and Camilo Villegas twice in 2000 and 2008. First class accommodations allow you to stay right on the course and by the summer of 2010, you will have two 18hole championship layouts to test your skills. Doug Carrick, designer of three of Canada’s top five new courses, has re-done the Peregrine course and added nine new holes to create a whole new track. It will complement the existing Osprey and Redtail 18-hole layout. 18 WWW.YLW.AERO Tourism Kelowna/Stuart Bisch http://WWW.YLW.AERO
