What’s geocaching, you ask? “The short definition is a high-tech, worldwide scavenger hunt,” Graeme McGufficke explains. “You use a handheld GPS device to locate a hidden container, or cache, that another geocacher has hidden. There are 6,500 [caches] within 100 miles of Asheville.” When you find the cache, which can range from a tiny film canister to a large ammo can, you sign your name to a logbook. Some caches even contain prizes to take – but you should always leave something in return. “Very little experience is needed,” McGufficke says. “You just need a handheld GPS unit, mobility and a desire to get out and see new places.” the wild, wild west Ride the thrilling Geronimo Drop and witness a staged bank robbery at Ghost Town in the Sky, a Wild West theme park in Maggie Valley that reopened in 2007. The Smoky Mountains landmark is known as “North Carolina’s mile-high theme park” because of its location at the peak of Buck Mountain.
