MUSIC TRAIL by Marilyn Jones Stamps Alabama resonates with American music history. From the foothills of Lookout Mountain to the back roads of Georgiana, visitors will find plenty of places for Alabama Music Appreciation 101. Start with the Alabama Music Hall of Fame (www.alamhof.org) in Tuscumbia. Here are the enshrined costumes, memorabilia, and images of some of the most recognized names in American music: Hank Williams, Lionel Richie and the Commodores, Emmylou Harris, Nat King Cole, Percy Sledge, Sam Phillips, and Tammy Wynette, among others. Tour FAME (www.fame2.com)—celebrating 50 years in 2009—and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio (www.muscleshoalssound.org) in nearby Muscle Shoals and Sheffield to see where many hits of the 1960s and 1970s were recorded. Florence is home to the W.C. Handy Home, Library and Museum. The museum and the W.C. Handy Music Festival each summer honor the legacy of the “Father of the Blues” (www.wchandymusicfestival.org). Country music fans flock to Fort Payne, the home of super group Alabama, to see the headquarters for the Alabama Fan Club and Museum (www.thealabamaband.com). Nearby is the Fort Payne Opera House (ca 1889), the oldest opera house in Alabama still in use. Birmingham is home to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame (www.jazzhall.com). In a twostory building in the city’s Civil Rights District, visitors can learn the story of unsung heroes such as John T. “Fess” Whatley, one of the most influential educators in American music during the 1920s and 1930s. In recent years, the hit television show, American Idol, has earned Birmingham the reputation for producing a slew of talented vocalists. Two of the winners, Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks, and one runner-up, Bo Bice, all hail from the Magic City. Be sure to visit Birmingham’s Redmont Hotel, where Hank Williams spent his last night before his death on January 1, 1953 at age 29. The singer/songwriter spent his formative years in Georgiana and Montgomery. Both cities have museums containing clothing, musical instruments, and other artifacts from his short life. The Hank Williams Museum (www.thehankwilliamsmuseum.com) is in Montgomery and his Boyhood Home is in Georgiana. Music events are big in Alabama; every major city has one. Montgomery has Jubilee CityFest; Birmingham has City Stages; Huntsville has Big Spring Jam, and Mobile has Bayfest. In addition, Athens hosts the Old Time Fiddlers Convention and people who write, play, and love music gather in Orange Beach yearly for the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival. 74 w w w. a l a b a m a . t r a v e l ALABAMA’S LIVINGSTON map R-3 ATTRACTIONS ALAMUCHEE-BELLAMY COVERED BRIDGE www.ohwy.com/al/a/albecobr.htm. 800-620-8044, 205-652-3527, 205-652-3528.
