JONES HERITAGE CENTER (1.1) Built in 1872, the lighthouse and keeper’s cottage are the oldest surviving brick structures in Glynn County. The architectural simplicity of the restored keeper’s cottage complements the towering 104-foot lighthouse with its 129 interior steps. Together, the lighthouse and keeper’s cottage comprise the Lighthouse Museum of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Beginning in late spring, visitors will enter the museum through the A.W. Jones Heritage Center. Two exhibit galleries are located in the Center. One gallery features a permanent exhibit that includes information about the 2004 Sea Island G8 Summit, highlighting Georgia’s commercial, political and cultural ties to the world. Other exhibits will feature items from the society’s permanent collection as well as traveling exhibits from other museums and historical societies. The Center also features a large multipurpose meeting room, state-of-the-art research library and a museum store. The Lighthouse Museum and A.W. Jones Heritage Center are open Monday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm; Sunday 1:30-5 pm. Summer hours (Easter to mid-August): Mon., Wed., Fri. and Sat. 10 am-5 pm; Tues. and Thurs. 10 am-9 pm; Sun. 1:30-5 pm. Admission fee for Lighthouse Museum; free admission for Jones Heritage Center. The St. Simons Island fishing pier, located in The Village, is a popular place for anglers young and old to try their hand at landing crabs, sharks and other interesting sea creatures. See page 34 for Georgia fishing license requirements. THE ST. SIMONS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE The St. Simons Island Lighthouse is the oldest brick structure in the area and is still maintained as an operational light by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The 104-foottall lighthouse, with its 129 interior steps, sits on the site of long-vanished Fort St. Simons, a British stronghold captured by the Spanish in1742, prior to their defeat at the fateful Battle of Bloody Marsh. In 1810, the first lighthouse was built here, but was destroyed in 1861 as retreating Confederate troops sought to prevent its use by Union ships. The current lighthouse, which began operation in 1872, sits behind the lightkeeper’s dwelling. Both are part of the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and A.W. Jones Heritage Center operated by The Coastal Georgia Historical Society. character based on journal entries and historical accounts by various Coast Guard personnel stationed at St. Simons Island during World War II. Seven galleries feature a variety of hands-on exhibits and activities. May-August, the outdoor nature center offers hands-on nature tours, workshops and programs for visitors of all ages.
