It’s a spectacle that takes place in geological time, rather than hours and minutes. As the polar icecaps freeze and thaw, our shoreline moves inland and then outward again–over millions of years. Geologists say Georgia’s coast has gone as far north as the fall line, a range of low hills that run between Macon, Augusta and Savannah, and as far seaward as the edge of the continental shelf. Because of this “constant” motion, Georgia’s coast is unique in having no hard edge like the coasts of Maine or Oregon. Inside the evershifting sands of the barrier islands, the Georgia coast appears as a band of tidal marshes, estuaries and wetlands that extend inland for miles. Though our coast is less than 100 miles long, it contains a quarter of the salt marsh on the U.S. east coast. The marsh provides stable and safe haven for the breeding and growth of scores of sea creatures, who in turn support a diverse and thriving humans–at the edge of land and sea.
