Here are a few nearby destinations that are an easy drive and offer an exciting day of exploration and discovery. Savannah,Georgia An hour north of Brunswick, Savannah has preserved its historic charm and beauty. The city’s downtown area is widely known for its oak-shaded streets, beautiful squares and homes. In the 2.2 square mile historic district, more than 1,000 buildings have been restored. Many homes are open to the public and serve as museums as well. On cobblestoned River Street, Savannah’s waterfront district, you’ll find converted warehouses now housing specialty shops, art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques. For history buffs, Fort Jackson, Fort Pulaski and Fort Screven are all within a 15-minute drive from downtown. The Ships of the Sea Museum, 503 E. River Street, is a fascinating stop for those interested in maritime history. Savannah’s Visitors Center, 301 M.L. King, Jr. Blvd., (912) 944-0455, is open every day and offers a slide presentation, plus information on walking, driving, bus or horse-drawn carriage tours of the city. Just north of Brunswick, Darien, the second oldest planned city in Georgia, was settled in 1736 by Scottish highlanders. The town, located on a high bluff overlooking the Darien River, was a major seaport during the 19th-century timber boom. Now, picturesque shrimp boats line the river bringing in a fresh catch daily. A bike path connects the historic downtown’s original squares and waterfront park to the Fort King George Historic Site. The first English fort in Georgia, Fort King George was built in 1721 to counteract French and Spanish expansion. Demonstrations and reenactments enliven a visit to the fort’s three-story blockhouse, officers’ quarters, barracks, museum and palisaded earthen works. Closed Mondays except holidays. Fort King George and Darien,Georgia Sapelo Island,Georgia About 35 minutes north of Brunswick lies one of Georgia’s unique undeveloped barrier islands. Take the ferry to Sapelo Island, one of the last places where the Gullah culture is lovingly maintained by residents, many of whom are the descendants of slaves. The lure of Sapelo brought several illustrious owners to this enchanted island. Cotton magnate Thomas Spalding built a palatial home to withstand hurricanes and the test of time. The home was later owned by Hudson motor executive Howard Coffin, who also founded Sea Island’s Cloister Hotel, and later by tobacco heir R.J. Reynolds. During the guided tour of the island you will visit the Along I-95 Mighty 8th Air Force Heritage Museum (north of Savannah @ Exit 102). Museum tells the dramatic story of 8th Air Force role in WWII.
