Of the five species of sea turtles found off the Georgia coast, the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) is the only one that consistently nests on the Golden Isles. Hatchlings that emerge from nests on St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island are the same turtles that will return to nest as adults. From May through August, nesting sea turtles swim ashore under cover of darkness to make their way across the sand, dig their nests and lay their eggs. After the turtle lays her eggs, she returns to the sea. During the 57-day incubation period, the eggs may become victim to ghost crabs, raccoons, dogs, hogs, humans and other predators. Hatchlings generally emerge from the nest in one group. Using visual cues such as light, the sound of the surf and instinct, they make their way to the surf. The odds of their survival are slim; only 60-90 percent of the eggs hatch; just one of every 1,000 hatchlings will live to adulthood. Several organizations throughout the Golden Isles are devoted to protection and preservation of threatened sea turtles and their nests.
