ComeCoastAwhile.com HOFWYLBROADFIELD PLANTATION Around 1807, what was once a vast cypress swamp gave way to the strong will of one William Brailsford, who carved from the inhospitable terrain a rice plantation along the banks of the Altamaha River. Brailsford’s son-in-law, James M.Troup, acquired more land and oversaw its growth to over 7,000 acres worked by some 350 slaves. It was a highly productive venture until war, hurricanes and the abolition of slavery caused its decline. Today, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation stands very much as it did at the end of its riceproducing era. Visitors can drive the short distance north from Brunswick and see a model of a busy rice plantation, fine antiques, and a brief movie. Both the house and the surrounding lands take one back to a time and life long since faded away. The Sidney Lanier Bridge provides easy access to Brunswick & The Golden Isles from I-95 Exit 29. A new public park planned at the foot of the new bridge on the North side will offer a playground, picnic area, boat ramp and other recreational facilities. attended electric lift. A 1.6-mile biking/jogging trail along Lanier Boulevard will link the park to nearby Howard Coffin Park. (See map page 14 for location.) 8. OVERLOOK PARK (.2) This is a fine vantage point for viewing some of the vast and beautiful marshlands and river networks that flank Brunswick and much of coastal Georgia. The park features picnic tables and an observation area with information panels about local history, wildlife and the marsh ecosystem. (See page 34 for information about Georgia fishing license requirements.) 9. LANIER OAK (.2) Under this tree during the 1870s, Georgia poet Sidney Lanier stood and, viewing the landscape, was inspired to write “The Marshes of Glynn,” considered his finest poetry. 10. VISITORS CENTER (6.7 to Stop 11) Located at the intersection of US Hwy.17 and the St. Simons (F.J. Torras) Causeway, the Visitors Center is the gateway to The Golden Isles. The pot in which Brunswick Stew reportedly was first made is on display here. A brief area video program and a weather satellite monitor are available for viewing. Free Wi-Fi Internet access. Open daily, 9 am to 5 pm. (Area literature available is outside after hours.) Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Days. HOFWYL-BROADFIELD PLANTATION (Not shown on map; 14.7 miles north of Visitors Center off US Hwy. 17). Between Brunswick and Darien lies Hofwyl-Broadfield, a state park and historic site where the evolution of a rice plantation comes to life. Tours and holiday events provide a glimpse into the culture of Georgia’s rice coast in the 1800s. Open TuesdaySaturday 9 am to 5 pm; Sunday 2 to 5:30 pm. Closed Monday except Monday holidays.
