2008 Biltmore Visit Planner - (Page 11) STROLL SECLUDED PATHS AND FORMAL GARDENS After resting beneath the shade of Japanese wisteria on the Library Terrace, follow the steps down to the open expanse of the Italian Garden and Shrub Garden. Further along, under the stone bridge, the Spring Garden charms those who seek its tranquil interludes and secluded feel beneath the lush canopy of old trees. The Walled Garden is a star attraction with stunning tulips during Festival of Flowers and spectacular displays of roses and summer annuals. A quilt of colorful chrysanthemums is a sure indication fall is just around the corner. Inside the adjacent Conservatory, exuberant tropical plants bloom year round. Enjoy a quiet walk in the 15-acre Azalea Garden, with native azaleas sheltered by an evergreen forest overflowing with dogwood, rhododendron, and magnolia. Explore trails to the Bass Pond, where the boundary between cultivated garden and woodland disappears. Continue to the waterfall and meadow below, or set out to explore the forests and fields beyond. From managed forests (the first scientific school of forestry in America started here) to manicured gardens, the estate is a living tribute to Olmsted’s genius and the accomplishments of those who honor his vision. We love every aspect of Biltmore, from the beautifully manicured grounds to the fact we can hang our feet in the French Broad River. The estate is a real treasure. – Raymond E. and Barbara D., Candler, NC See what’s blooming in every season with our online bloom calendar at biltmore.com. 11 800-411-3807 • BILTMORE.COM http://biltmore.com http://BILTMORE.COM
