2008 Biltmore Visit Planner - (Page 8) IMAGINE LIFE IN AN AMERICAN CASTLE 8 Like many before and many after him, George Vanderbilt visited the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina and was inspired to build a home here. Inspiration came from many sources: the natural beauty of the surroundings, the exciting ideas of his architect Richard Morris Hunt and landscape architect BILTMORE HOUSE Frederick Law Olmsted, and the skills and talents of his workers. Their collaboration resulted in a place as remarkable today as it was in 1895: 250-room Biltmore House, the largest private residence in the United States. This massive project required nearly six years of non-stop construction and the efforts of hundreds of world-class craftsmen, stonemasons, woodworkers, sculptors, cabinetmakers, and engineers. And while work continued on his new home, Vanderbilt traveled the world collecting antiques, furnishings, masterpieces of art, and things he simply liked.
