2009 Biltmore Visit Planner - (Page 2) A PLACE THAT HAS INSPIRED GENERATIONS OF VISITORS Restoration project unveils new rooms After years of research and painstaking restoration, four of Biltmore House’s most significant guest bedrooms are scheduled to open in 2009. These second floor bedrooms offer commanding views of Biltmore’s surroundings, elegant décor, and ongoing family connections. The Louis XV Room played a pivotal role in the lives of the Vanderbilts and their descendants. Edith Vanderbilt gave birth to her daughter Cornelia in this room in 1900, and Cornelia delivered her sons here in the 1920s. The Chimney Room is named for a richly hand-painted tiled overmantel that George Vanderbilt purchased during his European travels; he asked architect Richard Morris Hunt to incorporate it into a bedroom. G eorge W. Vanderbilt was a visionary. Unlike most men of his era (including his grandfather Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt), he wasn’t concerned about business and commerce. His interests lay in literature and learning, travel and exploration, art and architecture. His dreams were realized in Biltmore—his grand estate that remains the largest private home in America. Still family-owned and operated, Biltmore continues as an example of far-reaching vision and a family’s commitment to preservation. 2 800-411-3807 • BILTMORE.COM http://www.BILTMORE.COM
