The Union Street residential neighborhoods just north and south of Downtown Concord both qualify as Historic Districts on the National Register. The spectacular development of the Cabarrus textile industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led to construction of many substantial, well-detailed residences for mill executives and for the merchant and professional classes of the county. Most of this construction took place in Concord, the principal center of industry, commerce and finance. Today, Concord retains one of the largest and best collections of domestic architecture in North Carolina from this period. Memorial Garden. This three-acre 1804 garden is restored to its full glory.
