The tour includes an 85 mph ride around the track in a climate-controlled van, a visit to pit road and the SPRINT Cup and Busch Series garages and victory circle where the greatest drivers of all time have celebrated their victories. See page 11-12. NASCAR RACE SHOPS. Most NASCAR race shops are in Cabarrus County or very nearby; in fact, over 90% are within an hour’s drive. A tour of race shops takes visitors behind the scenes to see where the cars are built and the pit crews train. They may even catch a glimpse of their favorite driver for an autograph or handshake. See the centerfold pull-out map of race shops. REED GOLD MINE. The 17-pound gold rock discovered by 14-year-old Conrad Reed in 1799 s became the nation’s fi rst documented gold fi nd. His father originally sold the “rock” for $3.50 before learning it was gold. Today, Reed Gold Mine is a State Historic Site where visitors tour the museum and underground tunnels, watch an ore-grinding stamp mill in action and even pan for gold.
