A Destination For Nature Lovers Located on marshy islands that are boarded by the Currituck Sound, Knotts Island and Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge are unique destinations for one-of-a-kind day trips sure to be enjoyed by the entire family. On Knotts Island, visitors can participate in a variety of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. In addition, visitors can taste wine at two local vineyards, pick ripe fruit from an orchard, and sample a variety of fresh produce at small farm stands. Historically a hunting and fishing community, Knotts Island has been home to a number of well-known hunt clubs. It was the birthplace of the conservation group “Ducks Unlimited.” Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge is an 8,219 acre parcel located on Knotts Island. The refuge is a popular spot for bird watching, bicycling, photography, fishing, and kayaking. Home to many endangered and threatened species, including peregrine falcons and American bald eagles, Mackay Island is also an important wintering area for thousands of ducks, geese, and swan.
