The Official Currituck Outer Banks Guide - (Page 27) GENERAL INFORMATION Driving On The Beach Driving on the beach is a unique experience and requires drivers to take the following safety measures: • Before approaching the beach ramp or four-wheeldrive area, stop in a legal parking area and adjust the air pressure in all four tires to 15-20 psi. This will provide more surface contact with the sand. • Do not stop or park in the beach ramp area; the first one-half mile is a no parking zone. • Use 4WD onto the ramp and maintain a slow, steady speed, watching for pedestrians, horses and other animals at all times. • When stopping, always make sure there is enough room for other travelers to pass at both the water’s edge and at the dune line. • The speed limit on the beach is 35 mph; however, when traveling within 300 feet of any person or animal, the speed limit is reduced to 15 mph. • When approaching another vehicle, use your turn signal to indicate which side you plan to pass on. (It is customary to pass on the right). • The beach is a state recognized “road.” The shoreline and the dune line are designated fire, emergency, and vehicular traffic lanes. Parking or setting up of beach equipment is strictly prohibited. • Watch for pedestrians! The loud sound of the surf can make it difficult for people to hear approaching vehicles. In addition, children are often distracted and dart in front of cars. As a driver, you are responsible to stay alert. • Many people and animals live on the North Beach. The dunes and the property behind them are privately owned. Please restrict driving to the traveled roads.
