To distinguish the Currituck Beach Lighthouse from other regional lighthouses, its red-brick exterior was left unpainted, which gives visitors a sense of the multitude of bricks used to form the structure. It is one of the only lighthouses in America that still houses its original first-order Fresnel lens. The light continues to flash today at 20-second intervals from dusk to dawn, and it can be seen for 18 nautical miles.
