Opening in stages in 2008, the second phase of West Village is the largest adaptive reuse project in the state (Durham is also home to #2). Historic tobacco warehouses and factories have been transformed into residential apartments, offices, and restaurants. Golden Belt (May-June 2008) 900 E Main St, www.goldenbeltarts.com The creatively restored Golden Belt will enliven East Main Street’s spectacular seven-acre historic textile mill campus with a creative arts, pedestrian-focused atmosphere. Featuring 35 sky-lit artist studios open to the public, 37 modern live/work lofts, innovative retail and restaurant concepts, creative office space, a live music venue, art galleries, green space, and more. El Greco to Velázquez (2008) Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, www.nasher.duke.edu From Aug. 21 to Nov. 9, 2008, the Nasher Museum of Art will host a groundbreaking, international collection of rare paintings and objects from the “Golden Age of Spain.” El Greco to Velázquez: Art During the Reign of Philip III will feature more than 100 paintings and decorative arts, the only showing in the Southeast. Amtrak Station (Late 2008) W Main Street, Downtown Durham A new Amtrak Station will open in Downtown Durham December 2008 in the Historic Walker Warehouse, a part of West Village. Duke Central Campus Development (Phase 1, Fall 2008) www.duke.edu $240-million redevelopment of 200 acres located between Duke’s East and West Campuses, now home primarily to student apartments but considered underutilized. Of the 800,000 sq. ft. projected for construction, 150,000 sq. ft. will be for academic buildings. The additional space will be created for 1,200 apartments, eateries, a bookstore, fitness facilities, a basketball practice facility, and some retail establishments. Durham Performing Arts Center Historic Durham Athletic Park (2009) 500 W Corporation St, Downtown Durham Historic Durham Athletic Park, made famous by the “greatest sports movie of all time,” Bull Durham, will re-open Spring 2009 under the management of Minor League Baseball as a training lab for more than 170 teams across the nation and home field for the North Carolina Central University Eagles. The renovated ballpark is also home to the Bull Durham Blues Festival and World Beer Festival. Museum of Life and Science Dinosaur Trail (2009) www.ncmls.org Reconstructed walking trail featuring life-size, scientifically accurate dinosaurs and plants from the Cretaceous period. Group and individual representations portray how life may have been 75 million years ago. RDU Terminal 2 (Phase 1, Summer 2008) www.rdu.com The new Terminal 2 at RDU International Airport (co-owned and located midway between Durham and Raleigh) is a $570-million renovation and expansion project that will transform former Terminal C into RDU’s main terminal, featuring intuitive layout, larger ticketing and security areas, wider and longer concourse, and more gates. Greenfire Downtown Revitalization (Ongoing) Downtown Durham, www.greenfiredevelopment.com $284 million over the next seven years is part of Greenfire’s City Center revitalization. The goal is to redevelop and create one million square feet of space in the City Center, with 430 residences and 240,000 square feet of office space, while developing a 150-room hotel and 70,000 square feet of retail on the ground floors of four office and residential buildings and activating the streetscapes with 1,700 parking spaces. PFM/Nederlander/DCVB THINGS TO SEE & DO 23 Durham Performing Arts Center (Late 2008) Downtown Durham, www.dpacnc.com The 2,800-seat Durham Performing Arts Center opens in the American Tobacco District of Downtown Durham in December 2008. Broadway Carolina (2009) Durham Performing Arts Center January will bring the first season of Broadway Carolina, with Rent, Fiddler on the Roof, Legally Blonde, and The Color Purple. Durham Station Transportation Center (Early 2009) Pettigrew Street, Downtown The futuristic Durham Station Transportation Center will open across the tracks from Historic Downtown Durham in February 2009 providing a centralized location for taxis, Durham Area Transit (DATA), Triangle Transit (intercity, intraregional), and Greyhound/Trailways buses.
