Durham’s exciting cultural landscape includes two symphony orchestras, a Duke University Union (DUU) LiveEnt series, and three major art centers showcasing creative expression. In late 2008, the Nasher Museum of Art will host the world-renowned El Greco to Velázquez: Art During the Reign of Philip III exhibit, and the 2,800-seat Durham Performing Arts Center will open, showcasing Broadway productions in Durham and featuring The Color Purple. The pulse of Durham’s nightlife beats to many kinds of music— everything from country to Piedmont blues to jazz, R&B, hip hop, and more. Durham’s many historic sites and museums, refreshing nature areas, and 10 world-class golf courses also contribute to the community’s engaging personality. Durham is host to dozens of original festivals and annual events, 14 of which have national or regional recognition. Plus, there are more than 4,000 events in the Durham Event Calendar each year.
