City Fun, Hoosier Hospitality Casual and Sophisticated Dining Arts and History Parks, Festivals and Special Events The City takes great pride in its 20 major parks. Several of these preserves unfurl along Elkhart’s rivers. The gem of the system, Island Park, commands the waters just off-shore where the St. Joseph and Elkhart merge downtown. Visitors cross a footbridge onto the island and into the cool shade under arching branches of giant sycamores and oaks. Here and at the other riverside parks, you can fish, picnic, gather for reunions in rustic shelters or just relax. At Ideal Beach Water Park, visitors swim, canoe, cruise on aqua-cycles and test their putting skill—and patience—at the miniature golf course. The fun changes by the season at NIBCO Water and Ice Park. Summers, the park features geysers and colorful gardens. Winters, rent a pair of skates to glide the ice rink or a winding trail. And if you’re a golfer, the majestic oaks of Sims Oak Hills Golf Course rise above sweeping doglegs along the challenging par-71 championship course. This unique riverside facility—the first of its kind in the world—connects a traditional skating rink with an ice-paved trail, perfect for in-line and figure skating. A state-of-the-art refrigeration system ensures reliable ice throughout the winter. In warm weather, geysers, gardens and special events enhance the parklike setting along The RiverWalk.
