Kosciusko County 2008 Visitor Guide - (Page 34) Winona Lake WINONA LAKE inona Lake was originally the home of the Potawatomi Indians. A treaty was signed with the tribe in 1834, and the first settlers arrived soon after. Winona Lake has a rich history in a resort known as Spring Fountain Park, then a “religious Chautauqua” known as Winona Assembly and Summer School Association. The first Bible conference was held in the summer of 1895 in the area now named Winona Lake. Since 1995 the Town of Winona Lake has undertaken significant improvements resulting in an enhanced community image, as well as expanding its economic base. In 1995, the annexation of a tournament quality golf course, Stonehenge, and surrounding housing stretched the boundaries of the town and placed a major tourist draw within its borders. A new commercial district was developed in a reclaimed block of existing historic properties, Village at Winona. It is a virtual haven for collectors of original works of art and hand-crafted woodworking. Be prepared to satisfy your palate with the excellent offerings of imported wines and food, from the Vintage France Deli and Boutique to the superb BoatHouse Restaurant. Grace Schools, Inc. is an integral part of Winona Lake. Grace is a Christian Liberal Arts College and Seminary. It is located on a beautiful 165-acre campus in the heart of Winona Lake. Work on the Orthopedic Capital Center has been completed. The Orthopedic Capital Center is the new home of the Lancer basketball and volleyball teams, and provides meeting space. In partnership with Warsaw, Winona Lake will have a 1.8 mile segment of an eight-mile linear route for bicycle/pedestrian path called Lake City Greenway. There are currently bike paths in the Old Chicago Boys Club property off of Boys City Drive. Winona Lake is fortunate to have the opportunity to be the home of the “MasterWorks Festival.” This month-long performing arts festival features outstanding high school and college performing arts students from around the world, along with world class performing arts professionals. Over 40 free concerts are open to the public. Winona Lake embodies the very essence of an outstanding Indiana community.
