Golf was officially recognized in this region in 1908 when our oldest surviving golf course, Great Southern Golf Club, was built. By 1926 six courses were recognized as “on or near” what was then called “Old Spanish Trail.” Golf was booming and this was a favorite destination for mid-west golfers. Today with the addition of courses designed and built by Tom Bendelow, Earl Stone, Jack Daray, Mark 1926 Golf Trail McCumber, Arnold At that time, the Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Mississippi “Golf” Jerry Pate, Tom Fazio Coast had six standard courses and Davis Love III, we and the seventh enter the next 100 was in the making. years with the coast’s best golf product ever. We will continue to welcome golfers to this beautiful place for the next hundred years to come. Golf Timeline 1914 1902 Around 1902, 14 years before the first golf club in the U. S. the “Golf Coast” had golfers on Keller’s Green on the MS Gulf Coast. 1997 1953 1968 PASS CHRISTIAN ISLES was designed and built by the famous Tom Bendelow, one of the most important golf course architects of his time. This was a sure sign of things to come. SUNKIST COUNTRY CLUB built by Frank Stiedle to serve the growing golf community of Biloxi and probably as a direct result of the excitement of the PGA Tour coming the coast in the 40's. ST. ANDREWS GOLF CLUB was built by James Thompson and Earl Stone in the beach-front community of St. Andrews for both tourists & locals. THE BRIDGES GOLF CLUB at Hollywood Casino Bay St. Louis hired Arnold Palmer, the “king” of golf, to build a championship design that has been host to many events including PGA Tour Qualifiers and the Hooters Tour. DIAMONDHEAD COUNTRY CLUB, a new coast residential development, built its Cardinal Course. It was designed by John Lafoy COUNTRY CLUB built its second 18-hole course, the Pine Course. They use a local favorite, Earl Stone. This makes Diamondhead the only area club with 36 holes. 1972 1998 1977DIAMONDHEAD THE OAKS GOLF CLUB is designed by the famous Landmark Design group that built Kiawah’s Ocean Course and Oak Tree. It has been host to many PGA Tour Events. GREAT SOUTHERN CLUB, the first golf club in the state of Mississippi. First nine holes were designed by the famous Donald Ross and built by prominent New Orleans Architect, Charles Neiman. The original nine sported oyster shell tee-boxes and sand greens. 1908 1965 MISSISSIPPI NATIONAL (previously Hickory Hills) was the first of many designed and built by Earl Stone. It has played host to PGA NIKE Tours. DOGWOOD HILLS GOLF CLUB was built in Woolmarket by local Brent Williams to serve the local community north of Biloxi. Interstate 10 makes it easily accessible from the entire coast. 1992 2000 1999 1986 WINDANCE COUNTRY CLUB, another private community builds a championship 18-hole course by Mark McCumber and is host to many PGA Tour events. SHELL LANDING brings golf’s present star Davis Love III - to the Coast to design the area’s newest championship course and is an instant classic. Davis Love III opens Shell landing with a course record. 1927 GULF HILLS GOLF CLUB was built by Jack Daray, head professional of Olympia Fields in Chicago and winter resident teaching professional on the Gulf Coast at the old Biloxi C.C. GRAND BEAR GOLF CLUB brings golf’s past great star - Jack Nicklaus - to the Coast to design one of his best. Golf Digest gives it a 4 1/2 star rating. 2006 PRESERVE GOLF CLUB Designed by U.S. Open champion and award winning golf course designer Jerry Pate, The Preserve encompasses 245 pristine acres. 4 More Than A Golf Vacation • GolfCoast.com http://GolfCoast.com
