Hatteras – Ocracoke Ferry – Since the mid-1920’s, ferries have connected the coastal communities of eastern North Carolina. Today, North Carolina boasts one of the largest ferry systems in the United States. The ferry connecting the islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke is free and provides visitors with a relaxing and enjoyable 40minute ferry ride. Ferry runs year-round and reservations are not accepted for the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry. Visit page 52 for Ferry Schedules. 23. The Graveyard of the Atlantic M useum - Located at the end of Hwy 12 in Hatteras Village, next to the ferry landing. A unique museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich maritime history of the Outer Banks and the more than 2,000 known shipwrecks that rest off the Outer Banks. Interior construction continues behind the scenes while a section of the museum is open and a portion of its collections is on display. These include artifacts from diverse sources: the "Lost Lens" from the first Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the Enigma machine from the U-85 (the first U-boat sunk by the Allies), Billy Mitchell's historic bombing achievements off the Cape Hatteras coast, the Union gunboat Huron, the famous Ghostship Carroll A. Ocracoke I sland – An enjoyable day trip from Dare County’s Outer Banks is a visit to Ocracoke Island via the free Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry. This 14-mile island has a picturesque fishing village surrounding Silver Lake Harbor on the southern tip. The Ocracoke lighthouse, built in 1823, is the oldest beacon still operating in North Carolina. Ocracoke Harbor was once home to Blackbeard the Pirate, who was slain here in 1718. It is also the site of a British cemetery containing the grave of four Royal Navy sailors. A visit to the Ocracoke Preservation Museum is a must see, with relics from recently discovered Ft. Ocracoke. Ocracoke Island was named the #1 Beach in America in 2007 by international beach expert Stephen Leatherman, known as "Dr. Beach." Hyde County Chamber of Commerce.
