The Outer Banks 2008 Official Travel Guide - (Page 67) OUTER BANKS GETTING MARRIED On The Outer Banks, you can experience a wedding destination unlike any other. . . where more than 100 miles of windswept beaches and majestic sunsets provide the perfect setting for the most unforgettable day of your life! The Outer Banks is legendary for its beautiful beaches. Surf, sand and sea oats provide an unparalleled location for a picturesque wedding. With sand between your toes, the aroma of salt air and the song of seagulls, a ceremony along the shore promises to provide memories for a lifetime. Besides our breathtaking beaches, there are many other unique settings available for wedding occasions. – The Elizabethan Gardens (permit) – Located on the north end of Roanoke Island, the gardens create a beautiful and natural setting. Every season brings a fresh array of flowers, plants and trees. – Jockey’s Ridge State Park (permit) – From atop the highest living sand dune on the East Coast, couples will find a spectacular setting for their union. Located in Nags Head, the park offers panoramic views of both the Atlantic Ocean and Roanoke Sound. – The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (permit) – With its black and white spiral stripes, it is an international symbol located in the oldest national seashore in the country and provides a dramatic backdrop. Obtaining a Marriage License on The Outer Banks – Marriage licenses are issued by the Register of Deeds located in Manteo. Both parties must be present at the office to apply for the license. The following items must be presented: – A picture ID – Social security card or another certificate with your social security number listed, such as a W2 form or old pay stub. – Birth certificate if under 21 – Divorce papers The license is $50 and good for 60 days after issuance. The Register of Deeds can be reached at (252) 475-5970, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is closed holidays and weekends. Dare County uses a local magistrate, instead of a justice of the peace, to perform wedding ceremonies. These ceremonies are performed in the magistrate’s office in Manteo on Driftwood Drive, (252) 473-2010. A marriage license application can be filled out at locations throughout the state of North Carolina and can be used anywhere within the state. 67
