North Carolina A quarium on Roanoke I sland - The aquarium presents the aquatic environments of coastal Carolina through its theme "Waters of The Outer Banks." The variety of exhibits promises to educate and entertain visitors. Journey through coastal freshwaters to see river otters, turtles, and American alligators. Explore saltwater habitats from grass flats to Gulf Stream waters. Gently stroke a stingray or touch a hermit crab at the touch tanks. Watch fish and sharks cruise by the 35-foot long viewing window of the 285,000-gallon "Graveyard of the Atlantic" tank containing a one-third scale replica of the USS Monitor. A new exhibit, “Science on a Sphere: Bringing the Oceans to You” will introduce visitors to a new way of seeing the oceans. Visitors will be able to dive deep to the ocean floor, see the planet at night, watch hurricanes as they develop and track their paths and more. Science on a Sphere will open in the spring of 2009. Roanoke I sland Festival Park An interactive family attraction that celebrates the first English settlement in America. The centerpiece of the 25-acre island park adjacent to Manteo, is, Elizabeth II, a representation of one of the seven English ships from the Roanoke Voyage of 1585. Costumed Elizabethan sailors greet visitors and help them experience sixteenth century seafaring life. Also visit the Settlement site, Roanoke Adventure Museum and see “The Legend of Two-Path” film. In 2008, the outdoor American Indian Town and Cultural Education Center opens. The town site will offer a wide variety of activities, including building a dugout canoe, working a fish trap, planting and harvesting crops and more. Open mid-February to December 31. The on-site art gallery, fossil pit, museum store, and marshside boardwalks are free and open to all. Admission.
