Wanchese - M anns Harbor - St umpy Point - East Lake - The village of Wanchese, located on the southeastern tip of Roanoke Island, is the center of Dare County’s commercial fishing industry and site of the Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park. Located on the Dare Mainland are the villages of Manns Harbor, Stumpy Point and East Lake. 15. Cape Hat teras National Seashore Recreational Area - The national seashore extends more than 70 miles from South Nags Head to Ocracoke Inlet, covering 30,000 acres. The first national seashore in the country includes natural and historic attractions, such as lighthouses and lifesaving stations. There are three visitor centers open year-round, closed Christmas day. Picnic areas, camping and interpretive programs are offered seasonally. (252) 473-2111. - Whalebone Welcome Center - Operated by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the center provides information on attractions, events and directions. The center also offers restrooms, public phones, and picnic area. Rest areas are open 365 days a year; welcome center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March to December. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. (877) 629-4386 or outerbanks.org – Civil War Trail - Winding throughout the Outer Banks through Roanoke Island and Hatteras Island are parts of the Dare County Civil War Trail - a great way to experience a fascinating time in the history of The Outer Banks. 16. Bodie Island Lighthouse - Located within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area. The 156-foot tall horizontally-striped lighthouse is not open for climbing. A visitor center in the old keeper’s quarters features exhibits, an Eastern National Bookstore and is open year-round, closed Christmas day. Self-guided nature trail. Free admission.
